The Heart Attack that Changed It All

Steve is a kind and caring, conscious leader who I met while learning how to swim and work with sharks not long ago. Unlike the sharks I met, Steve is a dolphin, and dolphins are smarter and more fun to be around.

Steve and I became fast and dear friends. I’m going to share part of his story with his permission. I won’t reveal his last name because it feels weird to me.

Steve is in his late fifties, a dedicated family man with children younger than mine, and we share our lifelong quest to get over the Catholic guilt and head trash we picked up as kids.

Steve grew up and cut his teeth working in the midwest, where they breed cross country ski racers as if from Nordic nations. His character was shaped by brutal, cold, long winters that remind us of who is in charge. Mother nature keeps us humble.

Corporate Warrior

Unlike me, Steve rose quickly up the ranks of the Fortune 500. He developed a reputation as a steadfast business leader who knew the numbers and could also empower people to align and perform.

Steve made big money, traveled the world widely, and established a world-class network of people who respect and love him.
