If you’ve got sleep problems, this article is for you. Millions of people seem to struggle with sleep. Some of us end up with sleep disorders.

True story: A corporate executive finds himself naked again in an overseas hotel lobby in the worst-case scenario. It’s the middle of the night. Security helps him. He has serious sleep and stress issues. He eventually retires.

Here’s what I found when I searched online for some facts about sleep:

  • On average, adults need 7–9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. (The Sleep Doctor has a different spin on this.)
  • Around 35% of adults in the United States get less than the recommended amount of sleep.
  • 50–70 million US adults have a sleep disorder.
  • Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, affecting about 30% of adults at some point in their lives.
  • Shift work sleep disorder affects people who work overnight or rotating shifts.
