How to Cry Tears of Joy
They Happen Spontaneously Given to Devotion
It was 3:49 a.m. I was sitting in my reading chair, rereading and scanning my notes in one of my favorite books, The Cloud of Unknowing. I relish my early morning routine. It’s the time of day I love the most: dark, quiet, and still. Even Under Dog Jones, the most incredible rescue mutt in the world, sleeps.
It’s when I read something spiritual, journal, pray, contemplate, meditate, and, some days, paint before I write, like today. After reading the book for a while, I put it down, took a sip of coffee, and looked around the room. I took a deep breath. Suddenly, from within, I felt a joy beyond description. And I began to weep silent, blissful tears of joy.
From the depths of my soul, it was as if God said, “I am here. You are here with me. I love you more than you know. Here are the tears of joy to assure you that you are my child and all is well.”
My cheeks were wet. I kissed the small crucifix on my necklace. I thanked God as I do often throughout the day. I said to myself, “Thank you, Lord. I feel your mercy. Thank you for my life, many trials, beautiful wife, sons, and the beauty of the day that has yet to see the sun.”
