How Writing Can Make You Rich
It’s Not Only About the Money, But It Sure Helps
I thought my father was insane when he suggested I take a typing class in 1978. I was a high school junior living in New Hampshire and was full of myself even though I knew little about life.
Since then, I have learned that my father knew what I could not see until I typed my first newsletter in 1990. I said to myself, “Dad, thanks. You were right. I love you.”
“The rich man is always sold to the institution which makes him rich. Absolutely speaking, the more money, the less virtue.” — Henry David Thoreau
My father helped me be rich even though it’s not as much about the money we can make writing. Writing for the love of the art is what makes us rich.
You can never be broke if you feel rich. Feeling rich is a state of mind we can cultivate, given the desire to be still and know what matters most. I believe it’s finding meaning, purpose, and joy in our work.
It’s Not About Me
Looking back, my journey is mine, and yours is yours. But if you love writing as much as I do, you may find similarities in our journeys.
