Mostly definitely harder than writing, editing, designing the book and cover. The only way I sold books was hustling (direct selling) online and off, direct sales outreach, contacting meeting planners, etc.
My last book I gave away often because using it to boost professional credibilty, led to bigger coaching and consulting fees. That was far more profitable than book sales themselves.
Therefore, the book helped me make more money as a business consultant than an author. That's the bottom line for most of us.
I just finished ghostwriting a non-fiction book. I charged $10,000. It was much harder than writing for myself. But the burden of selling it lies on my client's shoulders, not mine.
I doubt I will ever ghostwrite another. My next book for myself will be my sixth. I'm plowing the edited articles through Medium, and LinkedIn wn route to a manuscript that might take a year, two, or three to finish.
Once again, I will use the articles and book to sell speaking and coaching gigs, and not get hung up on being a best-selling author.
To do that, one must invest $25,000 - $125,000 to publish with a hybrid publisher who gets the sales and distribution done along with slogging around the planet speaking and selling coaching and consulting gigs.
I give you lots of credit for writing a book. It's hard enough. Most people will never see it through. Those who do will give up too early because direct sales and marketing are even more brutal than writing a good book.
I hope this helps.
