Here are ten of the most epic American brand failures in history.
- New Coke (1985). The Coca-Cola Company’s decision to replace its classic formula with a sweeter version, called “New Coke,” resulted in a massive backlash from consumers, leading to the company bringing back the original formula as “Coca-Cola Classic.” (What is a leading cause of diabetes?)
- Ford Edsel (1957). Ford Motor Company’s launch of the Edsel, a mid-size car heavily marketed as a luxury vehicle, failed to capture the market’s attention, resulting in poor sales and ultimately leading to the brand's discontinuation. (Failure to listen?)
- Enron (2001). Enron, a former energy company, was exposed for fraudulent accounting practices, resulting in the company filing for bankruptcy and its top executives being indicted for criminal charges. (Was prison too kind?)
- Tylenol Poisoning (1982). Seven people died after taking cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. This resulted in a national scare and the company, Johnson & Johnson, having to recall all Tylenol products and create tamper-proof packaging. (Paid a fine?)
