Here are ten of the most epic American brand failures in history.

  1. New Coke (1985). The Coca-Cola Company’s decision to replace its classic formula with a sweeter version, called “New Coke,” resulted in a massive backlash from consumers, leading to the company bringing back the original formula as “Coca-Cola Classic.” (What is a leading cause of diabetes?)
  2. Ford Edsel (1957). Ford Motor Company’s launch of the Edsel, a mid-size car heavily marketed as a luxury vehicle, failed to capture the market’s attention, resulting in poor sales and ultimately leading to the brand's discontinuation. (Failure to listen?)
  3. Enron (2001). Enron, a former energy company, was exposed for fraudulent accounting practices, resulting in the company filing for bankruptcy and its top executives being indicted for criminal charges. (Was prison too kind?)
  4. Tylenol Poisoning (1982). Seven people died after taking cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. This resulted in a national scare and the company, Johnson & Johnson, having to recall all Tylenol products and create tamper-proof packaging. (Paid a fine?)
