I'll never forget the time my father's business collapsed. It was 1974. I was 13. We lived in one of the nicest homes in a small New Hampshire town of 20,000 people. Life was great until Dad's business failed.
After that, all hell broke loose. For example, one Sunday after Mass, the family was doing chores around the house when two men pulled up in a strange car and knocked on the front door.
My mother told me to "go play and be home before dinner." I knew something was wrong. It turned out that IRS agents were serving notice of an audit. At least that's the story my parents told me.
From that time on, I vowed to be a successful businessman. I also carried an irrational fear of the IRS. It's gotten better over the years. But back in the early days of my business, simply seeing the IRS logo made my skin crawl.
